Self check out good or bad?

The long line in a store makes the self checkout look very appealing especially if you only have a few items, no coupons, and are paying by cash. But is the self-checkout such a great thing? I used one once and it was ok, but I like the interaction with a person, especially if I am going to a brick and mortar store. Otherwise I would make my purchase online.

I overheard a man saying that he would never use the self checkout lanes and told his friend not to as well because that takes away someone’s job. True, instead of hiring more cashiers, there is generally only one person monitoring three or more self-checkout lanes. Yesterday when I went to Home Depot, there were very few takers for the self-check out lanes – even for people who had only a couple of items. Most people wanted to wait in a line and complete their transaction.

If you are pressed for time, using a self-checkout may be good, but several times I have seen customers using the self checkout have to wait for an additional authorization or someone to help them becasue they had a coupon or a sale price didn’t come up. Also getting a gift card when using a self-check out lane is difficult.

In order to make stores see that customers would like to interact with people, avoid the self-checkout lanes.
