Who says centerpieces have to be cut flowers? When you are planning a party a unique item or even a live potted plant can be an attractive centerpiece.

This weekend for a party instead of floral arrangements for nine tables, my mother bought a variety of large coleus plants, put basket wrap and ribbon around the pots. Then one guest at each table to was allowed to take them home. The cost for all the centerpieces was under $30.

Though not everyone would be able to get a great deal on the plants, it is possible to even buy a flat of plants at a grocery store and put two or three in a mug or small decorative pot. Plants not on sale? Think about larger nontraditional plants like lucky bamboo or a useful item on the table. If you have several tables, use a bottle of water with citrus or other fruit floating inside as a functional centerpiece. Fruit can also be used as a centerpiece.

Gather ideas from other places for centerpieces and be creative. It’s your party and you can decorate like you want to – ingenuity can often be less expensive.

Thomas’ 1st b-day party was at the beach so I used beach toys that I bought from Target as center pieces. Large beach buckets held chips, goldfish etc. A small wagon held hamburger buns etc. It was so easy and went with the them.

P.S. I am having a poster giveaway if you are interested.
