When I think of instant coffee I think of Sanka or some other grainy powder that you put into your water to make coffee. Actually Sanka was what was offered to people who wanted coffee but only drank decaf. Now Starbucks entering the market of instant coffee.
It seems like it is just to easy to either get good coffee or make it yourself almost anywhere. There may be a few people who remember the brew your own cup of coffee bags that never quite took off. They were like tea bags that you put into hot water for an quick cup.
There are other brands of instant coffee but when most coffee drinkers want coffee, instant will not quite cut it. Even if the instant is Starbucks. For someone who wants to make just one cup they could buy regular coffee, and use a filter or strainer with the grounds and then just pour water over it.
Starbucks is doing this for value. Of course better coffee will cost more. The greatest value that could be offered would be a regular cup of coffee for $1 that people will drink with cream and sugar if they prefer.
