I have been looking at what I can redeem for my points for a credit card or one of the many online point earning programs that I am enrolled in. Most offer magazines that you can send for a gift and gift cards. 

The best deal for using points is when you do not have to pay for an item to be shipped to you and also if redeeming the points is a good value. Generally, when you receive points for a credit card program redemption levels are generally high for items that you could buy at the store yourself. Gift cards are good deals though. Even better are the generic gift cards that are backed by a credit card company like the American Express of Visa gift cards. Those are a better value than store specific ones because you have the opportunity to spend them where you like.

If you plan on using a credit card, check your statement or the online site to see if there are any discounts offered for using you card at certain places online or if you can earn extra points that you are saving for something for yourself later.

I overheard a woman last night saying that even the really wealthy are being hit with financial problems. “I went to the theater and there was nobody there, and the play was really good, no one is spending money now. Also gifts are down as well. I have been getting calls for places that I have never donated to before.”

I agree with the lady, I too, have been getting requests for donations for companies that I have never donated to before. I understand that it is important to give, and I do, it’s just that now so many people are not giving not because they do not want to, but because they are in need themselves that it make sit more difficult for the charities and for small time philanthropists.

I am giving where I can, even if it means a small donation. If everyone you knew gave just five dollars to a local food bank or shelter, that small amount could make a huge difference between staying open and helping dozens or even hundreds of people.

Giving doesn’t have to be big or elaborate but if you have some items that are useful and could be put to good use like clothes or a later model computer consider giving these items to a place that could use them. Give some time to a place. It is even difficult to get volunteers for some places because when people are looking for work or have less money they don’t’ feel as though they want to give themselves, even if it is something free like donating blood. If you could get paid to donate blood or plasma, then why do it for free? It’s not always about money, it is about receiving. If you give then you have an open hand to receive.
