The stores that seem to be faring the best in this current economic climate are Aldi’s, Family Dollar and discount stores. When you are making purchases from places that carry mostly their own brands, you may want to pay attention to the sodium content for certain foods. If you are paying attention to the amount of sodium in your diet, you might want to check the amount of sodium that is in the generic or store brand of an item. Salt is cheaper than using other seasonings but if you check the sodium content of many lower cost items from dry goods, to soup to salad dressings or even steak sauce you will find that one of the main ingredients is salt.

If you want to save a little now and pay later because of health problems caused by too much sodium in your diet, pay attention to the labels. This does not mean that all generic or store brands have too much salt, but some do. What you gain by saving a little money now, will not help in the long run healthwise.
