Staying Cool
By Daphne | July 17, 2008
Don’t let the heat get you down.
Here are some inexpensive tips on how to stay cool in the summer.
- If you are going to be outside for a long period of time, wearing a hat can reduce your exposure to the sun and provide you with a little shade.
- Going to the beach - try taking your own umbrella or go into the shade for short periods of time if possible.
- No shade to be found? Soak a wash cloth in cool water, put it in a resealable plastic bag, then put it in the freezer for a few minutes or in the refrigerator overnight. When you are out in the sun, use the cool towel to refresh you.
- Freeze a bottle of water or iced tea and you can use it to put on your skin for a few seconds to cool you down. Plus, you will have a cool drink to boot. If you are freezing your beverage in your own container, don’t fill it all the way to the top to prevent expansion in the freezer. For commercially purchased products, pour a little out or make sure you don’t freeze them so that they are solid.
- Don’t turn on the air conditioning before you leave for work? Put your cologne or body splash in the refrigerator so that it is cool when you spray it in the morning. A cool spritz will feel refreshing when you get home too.
- Go to a public building like a library. In most areas the local library is also a cooling center. During the summer there are often many lectures, movies or programs going on. Use someone else’s A/C.
- For those with window/wall unit air conditioners, do not turn up the air conditioning full blast when you get home. Turn it on to a normal temperature and turn on the fan. Close the blinds or draperies to help keep the cool air inside.
- When cooking, try to cook items on the stove top as opposed to using your oven which will make your home warmer and make your air conditioner work harder.
- Outside the Mercury shows that the temperature is 90 degrees, just by going indoors the temperature may decrease a bit but not enough to make you comfortable. Do you really need to cool your house to 68 degrees? If the temperature is less than 80 degrees you may be able to get by with only a fan and closed drapes. For people who are very sensitive to heat, do not try to save money by keeping it warmer. Depending on where you live, cooling your house to 74 can be quite comfortable.
