Package Your Own
By Daphne | July 9, 2008
Packaging your own will definitely save you money, even if you buy a larger package and a container to put the items into.
They are cute and convenient. You know what I am talking about, those little 100 calorie or single serve packs. Most grocery stores offer them. They seem convenient until you really add up how much you spend. I was looking at cookies the other day and noticed that for about $4.25 you could get a package of 24 cookies about 12 ounces or you could get an 18 ounce package for less than 3. That’s an easy comparison to make. Instead of buying the individual packages, buy your own container and put 4 cookies in the container yourself. Besides, you are not wasting as much plastic for all of the individually wrapped items.
Packaging four cookies into a container yourself, even if you bought a container specifically for your small snack foods will save you money. Additionally, for foodstuffs like cookies or chips or cereal, you do not have to wash the container every day. That is if you are using the container daily for a dry food.
The same goes for travel sizes of items. The only things that you should really buy a travel size of would be deodorant and body powder. Everything else that is a liquid can be transferred to another smaller container which is very useful when you are traveling and traveling light is becoming an art. If you need a smaller size of cotton balls or cotton swabs, go and buy the snack size plastic bags or use sandwich bags, then put the amount you need into the bags.
Vitamin packs may look convenient for a trip but instead buy a pillbox. They come in various sizes. Even if you are going on a long trip, buy one that is organized for day and evening doses.
Package your own and save.

Not only will packaging your own save you money, but if you are packaging in reusable containers then there is less trash going into a landfill. Better for your wallet and better for the Earth!
