    The Cooking Experience

    By Daphne | June 25, 2008

Look in your cupboards and you might see some food items that you thought you might want to cook. Unique shaped pasta, gelatin packages, ice cream toppings or even a few sauces or two. Instead of actually trying them, you didn’t use them yet and instead left them to languish in the cabinet.

Summer is when you may want to try using some of the quick foods you have at home to prepare something lighter or rather something that will not heat up your home. Make a pasta salad out of some different noodles.

Boil water and make a gelatin dessert. If you like you can be creative and add fruit to it or freeze it slightly for a cool treat. Use pudding in a different type of cookie pie shell for a dessert that does not require using the oven.

Since most of us are not like Old Mother Hubbard from the nursery rhyme and have many foods in our pantries, look around and see what you can find to make an interesting meal or side dish.

Thinking of trying out a new recipe? Or thinking of trying the recipe you bought the ingredients for but didn’t make yet? Do not wait. The longer you wait, the closer the food will get toward expiration and wasted food, which are poor uses of money.

Also, think back on the food that you tried but didn’t quick like, was the recipe too bland but otherwise ok. Make the meal zing with additional spices such as black or white pepper, red pepper flakes, chili powder or garlic. By adding additional spices you are making a meal all your own.

Even if you add some extra spices atop a frozen pizza, you will have a more flavorful snack or meal.

Meals do not have to be dull, just because you are on a budget.
