DIY Flavored Water
By Daphne | May 20, 2008
Drinking water is good for you, but is does get boring after a while. Buying bottled water or expensive drink mixes is not the only option. Make your own flavored water.
If you drink water all of the time and want a change of pace and taste you may purchase the packets of water additives to give your water a little more zest. Instead of breaking the bank for a package that will only liven up a pint of water, there are some natural alternatives.
You can purchase unsweetened drink mixes for punch or lemonade and add less to your water for a little zip. Not only will you be able to control the amount of sugar you ingest but you will also be able to save money. A large envelope is enough to flavor several days’ worth of water because you use less than if you were making punch at home.
Another way that you can add more flavor to your water would be to use True Lemon products such as True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange. The packets are small and can be added to a pint of water for some additional flavor. Plus, these do not have any sugar. The packages are as small as a pack of sugar or other sweetener so if you want to carry a couple with you, they are convenient. I have tried these and you really do have to follow the directions because if you have more and a pint or half liter of water that you are flavoring, add an additional pack otherwise it is like you added nothing at all. The packages are not that expensive considering the amount that you get in a package and if you are not sure if you will like them, you can always request free samples before making a real commitment.
My favorite way of flavoring water is to use real fruit. About a week ago key limes were 20 for a dollar. Though I do like limeade, I decided that I was going to take a couple of limes and just add them to a pitcher of water for a little extra zip. I washed then cut two limes into slices, which I added to a half gallon of water. If you squeeze them gently and toss them into the pitcher you will get more flavor. This will last for a day or so. If you let the limes stay in the water the oil from the rind gives another dimension to your flavored water.
Don’t like limes? You could also add a couple of berries, lemons, a spring of fresh mint or a couple of slices of grapefruit to your water. The possibilities are endless!
