    Stretch Your Food Budget

    By Daphne | March 17, 2008

Cheap, quick food doesn’t have to be unhealthy. When you do a little planning and preparation, you can make your food preparation a lot easier and more interesting.

Bring a new meal to life with food that you really can make into another meal. Buy a rotisserie chicken from your grocery store. Then saunter over to another aisle and pick up some fixings to use the left over chicken as tacos, quesadillas or a hearty salad. If there is enough chicken left over, make a chicken salad sandwich or use some chunks of chicken in your salad. If you like chicken on pizza, use the leftover bits and make your own pizza at home.

Using food in different ways brings leftovers to life. Make a meatloaf and serve it traditionally one night and then serve it like a burger the next night. If you buy a package of small dinner rolls then cut the meatloaf into small pieces and make your own bite sized burgers.

If you like a certain food that freezes well, make more, portion it out at the peak of freshness and then freeze it. Don’t wait until you have this huge pot or dish of something and then decide to freeze your food.

Food is taking a toll on everyone’s budget. Search around for hearty, filling foods with more emphasis on the side dishes such as vegetables, breads and grains and less meat. This doesn’t always mean that your bill will be cheaper but if you buy food that lasts longer and makes you feel fuller then your food budget will go a lot farther.
